Too much talking about yourself, not enough about the product and what problem you're solving for your customers. Love your enthusiasm but sharpen it up in that respect.
W. Buffett 6/27/08 12:41PM #
Matt - A startup is only as credible as the folks that start it. At this point, the folks at MPTrax have nothing but their names. And it's a good name. I like these guys.
Nina 6/27/08 1:0PM #
This is an awesome idea!!
Lars Teigen 6/27/08 1:4PM #
Great pitch - good concept - good luck!
Towanda! 6/27/08 1:5PM #
This is cool, it's like ebay for bands... That guy reminds me of a white Randy Jackson.
24 Platinum Entertainment 6/27/08 1:28PM #
Sounds like MPTRAXX is on the verge of something very BIG..... GOOD LUCK
Susan 6/27/08 1:30PM #
It would appear that this company is on the cutting edge of a untapped market. Go for it!
Peter S 6/27/08 2:8PM #
Sounds like a pretty compelling business model and market.
Kate M-C 6/27/08 2:53PM #
Fabulous idea. I'm such a big fan of emerging artists and they aren't getting the funding, playtime, etc. that they need! This seems like a great way to connect great music and the people that listen to it.
Max 6/27/08 2:58PM #
Needs a new name. MPTrax?
Matt 6/27/08 3:5PM #
ummm doesn't mysapce already do this? What are they doing that is so innovative? As a brand owner why would i want to invest in a no name group? Don't most promoters work with managers and booking agents and already have personal relationships set up? This sounds like a waste of time and money.
Scott 6/27/08 3:32PM #
Matt – I work with MPTrax, and I wanted to clarify a bit. We support bands by providing sponsorships from major org's they could never get to. The bands get sponsored and the major org's get exposure they're looking for. Personal relationships don't equate to money if your touring bus needs new brakes. Bookers deal with clubs and venues. Now Joe Frat has the same opportunity to book a band he likes for his frat's homecoming. Oh yeah, Google was a no-name group once to. How’d they do?
Alex 6/27/08 3:37PM #
Havent these guys figured out that no one wants to pay for music? We are inundated with TOOOOO many bands - the problem is not that we cant find them its that they ALL SUCK. Solve that problem and you'll be rich
Matt 6/27/08 3:57PM #
Scott - hey guess what, major brands don't want to connect to no name groups that perform for 40 people in a dive bar. Sorry there is a reason that marketing dollars are spent on the bigger bands and not the no name groups - the ROI is there. With Gwen Stefani you are guarenteed to hit how many thousands? With the next Myspace rapper/alt band/crapfest you aren't guarenteed anything but a waste of money. cosign with alex.
aw 6/27/08 3:57PM #
I like the diploma in the background. Where do I send money?
Matt 6/27/08 3:59PM #
Dude seriously your CEO pitched this in front of a plaque for selling UNK - walk it out... greeeat thats what we need someone promoting crap to tell us what the next hot crap is we need to be listening to. gag.
Matt 6/27/08 4:5PM #
And how are you going to actually translate a band's popularity on your site to actual ticket sales on their tour? Myspace can't do that. groups will have 200K+ friends and can't sell more than 10K of CDs and on top of that couldn't sell out a show if they tried.
Scott 6/27/08 4:8PM #
aw: How much do you have? :)
David Sherbow 6/27/08 4:14PM #
It is obvious from the nature of your criticism that you know there needs to be a better way to find and develop another generation of great mainstream talent. I have built a site that I think can change the way we do music business. If I were you I would reserve my judgment until you see my vison in action.
Matt 6/27/08 4:18PM #
i will definately reserve final judgement for the site release, however your pitch has me raising those questions and a million more. Coming from the music industry is my first problem since you guys are consistently the LAST to figure anything out regarding the web... How are those RIAA lawsuits going? great plan you had there (kidding).
Ric 6/27/08 4:59PM #
Can't wait to check out the live site. Viewing and then booking the band all online would be nice.
Scott 6/27/08 7:58PM #
Matt - The RIAA suits are going well. Starting next week, we'll be suing infants, nuns, and the homeless. We foresee great things to come (kidding too!).
George 6/27/08 10:9PM #
As I understand this, it looks like a business model that can deliver benefits to all participants. Yeah, people want free music--and they can get it--but they also will buy it occasionally, when it is easy for impulse purchase. And it looks like this gives groups a chance for exposure so that if a lot of people like them, they can actually get ahead with professionals who would not otherwise get a chance to hear them. Agree that the name is a little lame. Good luck!
Janet, London, UK 6/27/08 10:53PM #
Its about time something like this is actually being done! Always the record execs make the big money and the bands always seemed to pay their salaries! This seems to be a win-win situation for everyone> Good luck!
Nancy 6/28/08 7:2AM #
Wow, looks like and sounds like a winner. This could (and should) work and provide a missing link in the music industry. Best of luck on this terrific product!
The Baltimore Slam 6/28/08 9:53AM #
Sounds like a good concept to bring artists and potential fans together in an organic way with no middle-men control freaks in the mix playing god with artist's future. This is the kind of thing that gives positive re-enforcement to a struggling artist(s) who would otherwise get frustrated with the music biz in the first place. This concept merely puts artists and fans together where "making it big" is not so important that an artist just may end up "making it big" without even trying........
David P. 6/28/08 12:46PM #
I am involved in the music industry myself...the idea...doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose to me.....the industry works one way only right now...and before this idea can work...the industry itself needs change.....
David Sherbow 6/28/08 1:0PM #
David P - MPTrax doesn't rely on the music industry for anything. I understand the music industry as well as anyone and the digital music discovery world from the cutting edge. The whole purpose behind MPTrax is to reinvent the way we do music business. Those presently in control will have no effect. Enlighten me, what is your take on the one way the music industry currently works?
Mark Frost 6/28/08 1:11PM #
Good pitch, lots of starving bands out there looking to get discovered. I wish MPTrax the best of luck.
Josh O. 6/28/08 3:54PM #
Great idea David. Sounds like a great platform for up and coming artists to connect with sponsors. Best of luck.
Robin 6/28/08 4:45PM #
I dont like the 'bling bling' you put into it. I dont like it when elevator pitch is all about revolutionizing something and that everyone will follow. Then again im no VC, so you dont have to convince me to get funding. You brought to my attention only one very interesting idea, but all the rest I found unnecessary. Compare your pitch to a single espresso shot. Water it as less as possible. my two cents
Joe 6/28/08 5:1PM #
Long elevator ride
Lisa 6/28/08 11:22PM #
This concept has been around for about 7 years...check out Rateourband.com Therefore, MPTrax is not so revolutionary...sorry dude
Scott 6/29/08 3:38AM #
Lisa - RateOurBand.com doesn't have half the functionality of MPTrax. We're still talkin' about a revolution...
David Sherbow 6/29/08 5:37AM #
Lisa - Rateourband has no quantifiable traction and nothing of value for either artists or users other than securing a rating. Unlike MPtrax, it has no way for artists to make real money or to be discovered through any meaningful process or for users to be engaged and retained. Over its 7 year existence what major artists has the site discovered? Describe the benefits you've gained by being on the site. When MPTrax launches our value props will be immediately obvious to you.
Kevin 6/29/08 9:54PM #
This sounds like you intend to use crowdsourcing techniques to help fans further their favorite band's success towards climbing the ladder to center stage. Correct? Interesting idea but why would a band use your services versus creating their own branded social network on Ning or signing up for Sell A Band where fans actually invest in the band itself with the opportunity to generate revenue from the band's success?
DAvid Sherbow 6/30/08 4:30AM #
MPTRax will have a promotable social network where an artist can build an emotionally vested fan base without whcih a branded social network is useless. Sellaband uses 30 of 50 K to make album, the rest to pay Sellaband and make copies. No mechanism for promotion. MPTrax will get deserving bands sponsoships and provide a booking platform from which they can generate gigs.
Tobias 6/30/08 8:22AM #
It is about time somebody figured out how to bring radio, records, and promotion under one roof. What MpTrax does is simplify the entire supply-chain model and include the listener. The so-called music oriented social networks have failed at this. I bet the band gets a better deal keeping more and spending less time managing their online persona.
Z Gyrl 7/1/08 3:52AM #
In the olden days record companies had to spend money searching out talent. Then the horrific lab experiments started and we got a lot of musical pap as a result. Let's face it, we're not going back to the old model, the current one sucks. Let the games begin!
Joe 7/2/08 10:56AM #
You got it Z Gyrl, there has to be a better way than fight the labels each year for their monies to promote yourself. This should be amazine and with David's connections thru mptrax It won't have any trouble leaving the ground. This is based on experience with the gentleman.
DaNica 7/2/08 3:48PM #
Trust what you hear,David will bust his ass for ya. He is powerful and kind, so why not let him show you. You've got nothing to loose and $$$ to gain. He's an R&B guru xoxo DaNica
Wanda 7/6/08 8:27PM #
Great Idea, wish I had thought of this.
24 Platinum Entertainment Marketing & Promotions Inc. 7/7/08 9:7AM #
Sounds like a great concept. I think Dave is on the verge of something big. One thing about Dave he will work to make it happen.
AlphaJilly 7/8/08 9:9AM #
I was an Alpha Phi, and very involved in the Greek system in college, something like this would be great for Greeks, and other groups who want to book bands... I now work in the Student Activities Department at Johns Hopkins university, and I know that if the word gets out about this ALL of our student programming groups would be interested in this idea. We have 275 student groups at our university, many of which come to our office to ask for help in booking bands. The sole purpose of our programming student groups is to book acts for the student body... This seems like it is perfectly made for campus programming. You should totally market this to Student Activities offices all over the country. LOVE it.
Scott 7/8/08 9:16AM #
AlphaJilly - We're all over that. Thanks!
Kathrine 7/8/08 4:22PM #
Great innovative idea. I wish I had of thought of that. Very exciting!!!!
Francisco 7/16/08 10:48PM #
Why aren't you based in Austin?!!!! It's the capital of live music in the U.S. because there are live music events literally everyday
esteban 7/17/08 12:14AM #
I like it.
Pigeon 7/17/08 1:15PM #
I agree with Francisco... Lots of new bands in Austin... Austin is where all of the new bands are blowing up.
David Peterson (World Wide Talent Search) 7/18/08 1:50PM #
Again...I am starting an Internet Based Talent Agency....WEBSITES like this are already all over the internet...(Ourstage.com/Famecast.com/www.MOG.com) What we need...is people to help get these emerging artists out there...not just FANS and websites that support these individuals... Focus needs to be spent on the Social Media Aspects of it...thats where a lot of money is currently being generated...WE NEED TO GO TO THESE BANDS...NOT MAKE THEM COME TO US.... WE NEED TO "HELP" the emerging talent break onto the scene...if we want music to change...we need to create a solid foundation for change...then gather followers to make it happen.
David P. 7/18/08 2:3PM #
Here's out the music industry works...this small word diagram below will show you how it works... 1.)Corporate Music Executives/CEOs 2.) Artists/Bands 3.)Distribution Companies (Radio/Internet/Store) 4.) EVERYONE WORKING FOR THESE PLACES 5.) FANS... That's how it works...the corporate executives/ceo's play what "THEY" want and what "THEY" see as being most marketable....that's the problem.. Please don't tell us that's not how it works...we've done the research..we've talked to people....for the most part...songs are drilled into our heads over and over...it's not saying that we have to listen to the music...but...if we hear the songs enough times...they catch on... If you would like to talk with us...about working together somehow...and the visions I currently have...please...by all means drop us a line at worldwidetalentsearch@gmai.com
Scott 7/20/08 10:16AM #
Francisco - You're very right. Austin is one of my favorite cities in the U.S. I've spent a lot of time there, and miss Guero's daily. David - I partially agree with you. MPTrax will help create not only the social network you're talking about, but also shift the focus deservedly back toward fan focused decision making. Others have tried but got lost in the money shuffle.
David P. 7/20/08 3:30PM #
Well, it is my hopes...that I will be able to continually gain and understanding of MPTRAX and form a mutually beneficial business relationship with MPTRAX if we see that our goals/visions are along the same lines.
Taylor P. 7/24/08 2:2PM #
myspace.com / artistforce.com / soundclick.com / purevolume.com / taxi.com / ourstage.com / nextcat.com ... I could go on... Our Stage.com has just signed a deal with Live Nation the biggest concert promoter in the US and abroad. From what I see of the information architecture of MPTrax and the branding I don't think it will translate with users. Your competitors may not be doing exactly what you intend to do but since they already have the technology and user base it could take them a nano second to snub you. Good Luck.
Scott 7/25/08 1:25PM #
Taylor - Taxi charges a substantial fee to join, MySpace is becoming to big to matter (too much distraction), and the rest don't do the one thing that MPTrax does best -- but again, you can't see that 'til after launch. However, I'd love to hear more about what you think; feel free to email me: scott@mptrax.com
